An ESG Revolt Begins

During early August, Arizona Attorney General Mark Brnovich sent a letter to BlackRock CEO Larry Fink, taking him to task on the company’s responsibilities as a fiduciary, especially when it comes to the investment dollars of state pension funds. The letter, which accuses BlackRock of forcing ESG policies on American companies and their employees whose retirement savings are also under their control, was signed by 18 additional state AGs.
The letter questions BlackRock’s duty of loyalty. “Many of our laws state that a fiduciary must discharge their duties solely in the interest of the participants and beneficiaries,” the letter stated. “The stated reasons for your actions around promoting net zero, the Paris Agreement, or taking action on climate change, indicate a rampant violation of this duty .... read more

Taking a Closer Look at IPCC
In-pit crushing and conveying systems offer improved flexibility to meet site requirements

By Russell A. Carter, Contributing Editor

The financial figures emerging from the Q2 2022 results released by major mining companies paint a mixed picture of the industry: Depending on what metal or mineral a company mines, profits are up – in some cases, from three to five times higher than the corresponding period last year (Teck, for example) – or down more than a quarter (Rio Tinto) or even a third (Fortescue Metals); annual operating cost increases are in the range of 10%-15%; and companies are strongly signaling their intent to reduce maintenance costs, increase productivity and implement digital technologies. Numbers like those, and the aura of market uncertainty suffusing the industry, can lead to a conclusion that miners ..... read more

Narrow Vein Mining Machines Improve Life for Operators
The top offerings have performance specs that more than meet the needs of modern mines, and feature the operability and cabs that meet the needs of operators.

By Jesse Morton, Technical Writer

The newest and best narrow vein mining machines on the market are beyond state of the art. Nimble yet robust, they are electric powered or low-emission, have automation or remote control capability, offer machine health monitoring, and deliver more production in a smaller footprint than do predecessor units. Still, the primary benefi ciary is, in most cases, the operator. Compared to those of earlier models, the cabs are often spacious, quiet and air conditioned. The controls are ergonomic. Visibility is optimal. The screens are relatively small and nonintrusive, but the information they give is critical. These machines were developed to meet the strict criteria ..... read more

Going for Gold
Innovations that are boosting gold recovery and green credentials

By Carly Leonida, European Editor

Gold processing plants are operating in an increasingly challenging environment with regards to energy, labor and environmental, social and governance (ESG) considerations. The average grades of new deposits are also declining, and so optimizing operations over a range of sometimes competing objectives can be tricky. There is no simple answer to these challenges, many of which are site specific. But harnessing the most advanced technologies and employing trained personnel to operate and maintain plants are important components in getting the most from a deposit while meeting stringent economic and ESG measures. Kenneth de Graaf, Global Product Line Manager for downstream gold recovery products at FLSmidth, and a keynote presenter at AusIMM’s recent Gold Plant of the Future Symposium, shared some insights ..... read more

Water Management Gets Smart
A holistic and digitally enabled approach to water management across the mine lifecycle is key to sustainability.

By Carly Leonida, European Editor

The efficient and sustainable use of natural resources, including water, is a growing concern for mining companies across the globe. As operational costs and environmental, social and governance (ESG) pressures increase, revisiting water strategies and systems and questioning whether their designs are fit, not just for today but for whatever the future might bring, is not just ‘the right thing to do’ by people and the planet, it’s also a smart business decision. “When I started in the industry in the early 2000s, water was usually treated as a resource with little inherent value,” Jim McKinley, Senior Hydrogeologist at Stantec, explained. “But now, mines are increasingly .... read more

Lundin Mining founder and former chairman, Lukas H. Lundin (64), passed away recently, following a two-year battle with brain cancer. He was a driving force behind the tremendous successes of companies within the Lundin Group. Lukas started his career in the international energy and mining sectors in the early 1980s, working side-by-side with his father, the late Adolf H. Lundin. Under the leadership of Lukas and his brother Ian, and in close cooperation with the rest of the Lundin family, the Lundin Group has grown into an internationally recognized portfolio of energy and mining companies with operations spanning the globe. The 11 companies that comprise the Lundin Group today have a combined market capitalization in excess of $11 billion, directly employ more than 15,000 people, and create opportunities for tens of thousands more. Lukas Lundin´s sons Harry, Adam, Jack and William, in a joint statement, said, “Our father is our biggest inspiration. His passion for the industries to which he devoted his life was unparalleled. Lukas saw people as the key to success and spent decades building some of the strongest management teams in our industries.” Lukas founded Lundin Mining with his father in the mid-1990s and was a member of the board of directors and chairman of the company for more than 25 years until he stepped down in May 2022. In his role as chairman, Lukas oversaw Lundin Mining’s development from an exploration-stage company into a global mid-tier producer with a strong copper focus and a portfolio of world-class assets.
