Can We Deliver?

The demand for raw materials and energy is a function of population and its desire to improve its quality of life. That means different things to different people. For some, it means a transition away from fossil fuels to save a planet that has reached its boiling point. For others, it might simply mean access to shelter, clean water, and affordable electricity. While reuse and circularity are important, society can’t recycle its way forward. Mining must provide those resources. Keeping up with expected demand, however, could be a tall order.

During early July, Anglo American posted, “The Role of Mining in a Transitioning World,” to its website. The presentation was given by Paul Gait, the company’s chief economist. He sets it up by tying economic growth to the accumulation of commodities, such as steel (iron ore and coal) and copper, which is where most of the mining investments take place today. He showed how .... read more

Hydrogen Prospects Excite Platinum Miners
By Gavin du Venage, South Africa Editor
Hydrogen energy is an idea that just won’t go away, and there are few more enthusiastic about it than South African platinum producers. Proponents say hydrogen is a potential source of energy that is clean, abundant, and, in the case of automobiles, has the same convenience for consumers as gasoline or diesel. A fuel cell using a platinum catalyst could convert hydrogen to electricity, power a generator or vehicle. Unlike batteries that take hours .... read more

CAS Comes of Age
Collision avoidance systems for mining fleets have come on leaps and bounds over the past five years, we look at some of the latest developments.

By Carly Leonida, European Editor.

Collision avoidance systems (CAS) and vehicle intervention systems (VIS) for mining applications have matured significantly over the past five to 10 years, most notably in the shift from collision awareness to collision avoidance capabilities. These technologies are a natural progression from proximity detection systems (PDS) and have evolved to meet the complex, real-time safety and production needs of hazardous heavy industrial applications, such as mining. It’s worth noting that while CAS and PDS have similar functionalities and technologies, they complement each other in mining operations with the primary focus .... read more

A Tale of Three Suppliers
The demand for proven solutions for reducing dilution is growing. Recent developments for three innovative suppliers show the growth curve to being able to meet that demand and profit from it..

By Jesse Morton, Technical Writer.

In the narrow vein mining solutions space, it is the best of times and the worst of times. The idea of surgical mining is only gaining traction and interest from investors and miners. At the same time, showing results from the field is critical to making a sale, gaining a mining partner for co-development, and attracting investors. Dilution can cause bankruptcy for miners, making them adverse to taking risks on new and innovative but unproven solutions. Three suppliers of the most innovative solutions for reducing dilution in narrow vein mining are at three different milestones in the journey to market acceptance. One is an established, successful supplier, recently acquired .... read more

Keeping Vibrating Screens Lean, Clean and Green
Suppliers are finding ways to support the industry’s goals for energy reduction, materials conservation, process efficiency and the circular economy.

By Russell A. Carter, Contributing Editor.

Companies in the extractive industries sector generally have little or no control over the market price of their products. Consequently, the mining industry’s operational focus is on managing all aspects of production to achieve the lowest cost per unit at the highest rate of output. Vibrating screens have traditionally been used throughout the industry to help in this strategy by reducing the amount of waste material generated through processing, while contributing to the goal of achieving the highest product yield. That hasn’t changed, but as global demand for base metals, precious metals, battery metals and various types of industrial minerals shifts, sinks and surges in response to economic trends, screening technology needs to advance at a rate that keeps pace with evolving processing demands. Some of those demands include .... read more

Water for Mining, Today and Tomorrow
We look at how a ‘reduce, reuse, recycle’ mentality from mine operators in water stewardship can generate positive environmental, social and economic impacts.

By Carly Leonida, European Editor.

While water is often considered as a ‘renewable’ natural resource, climate change is altering global weather patterns and making its availability harder to predict. We’re all familiar with the statistics – McKinsey & Co.1 states that, today, 30%- 50% of copper, gold, iron-ore and zinc production is concentrated in areas where water stress is already high. In Chile, for instance, 80% of copper production (the availability of which arguably underpins the global energy transition) is in extremely high water-stressed and arid areas, and this is expected to rise to 100% by 2040. In Russia, 40% of the nation’s ironore production, currently located .... read more
