Expomin’s New Location Disappoints

During late April, mining suppliers from around the world spent four days stuck in a traffic jam on Route 68 trying to get to and from Expomin. The 4-lane highway, which connects Santiago with Viña del Mar on the Pacific Coast, traverses through Chile’s famed vineyards. Normally, driving in South America is a thrill with aggressive drivers and speed limits that seem to be a mere suggestion. On this trip, however, the car rarely broke 40 km/hr as we sat in traffic for hours.
On the first day, we caught a break when the Chilean police force, the carabineros, cleared the way for President Gabriel Boric’s motorcade. His appearance at Expomin along with other dignitaries signified the importance of the mining sector to Chile’s economy. President Boric’s address at Expomin came a few days after he announced his plans to nationalize the lithium mining sector. Boric is a populist president and .... read more

Pragmatic OEMs Balance Customer Needs With Low-carbon Goals
Top truck and shovel OEMs enter partnerships and develop solutions to help customers achieve their most critical goals, which align with the U.N.’s 2030 Agenda

By Jesse Morton, Technical Writer

Calendar year 2030 is the deadline set by the United Nations (U.N.), its Net Zero Coalition, and the World Economic Forum for Global Compact participants to reduce carbon emissions attributed to their operations by at least 45%. Mining industry Compact participants, as well as society at large, has much to accomplish before then to make that happen, according to the top suppliers of truck-shovel mining solutions. For example, a new supply chain is required, and will be created during a period when supply chains across all sectors are disrupted. Meanwhile, miners are expected to innovate, embrace rapid change, and adopt new solutions, while hamstrung by staffing shortages .... read more

Driving Mining into the Future
We look at the latest developments in mining tire design, monitoring and management

By Carly Leonida, European Editor

The past few years have been tumultuous for the global off-the-road (OTR) tire market. After a period of pent-up demand following the COVID-19 pandemic, the supply-demand balance began to normalize during 2022. However, tire manufacturers and dealers continue to navigate supply chain and logistical headwinds. Despite these issues, global GDP continues to grow, and underlying commodity demand remains strong; something which is expected to continue well into the future. Where there is demand for metals and minerals, there is demand for OTR tires, and the future looks bright for suppliers whose collective focus is evolving to encompass greater sustainability as well as performance and safety. ..... read more

Hydraulics Tech Evolves to Match Mining’s Demands
Hydraulic systems have been a mainstay of mining productivity for six decades, and suppliers are working on solutions that will allow them to keep pace with the industry’s electrification, decarbonization and energy-conservation efforts

By Russell A. Carter, Contributing Editor

The simplest dictionary definition of work – to set or keep something in motion – also accurately describes the role of hydraulics in heavy offroad machinery applications. For more than 60 years, miners have depended on hydraulic power to carry out the pushing, pulling, lifting and turning tasks involved in daily operations. Traits such as overall ruggedness, high power density and the ability to handle variable shock loads have enabled hydraulics to massively expand their role in mining, growing from their initial implementation as a welcome replacement for clunky .... read more
