IEA Hosts Critical Minerals Summit

The International Energy Agency (IEA) hosted a Critical Minerals and Clean Energy Summit at the end of September at its headquarters in Paris. Ministers from 50 key producing and consuming nations gathered with around 40 business leaders, investors and heads of international organizations to discuss effective courses of action to ensure rapid and secure energy transitions. The event, according to the IEA, sought to build consensus on priorities to diversify mineral supply chains, enhance market transparency, accelerate technological innovation and recycling, and promote sustainable and responsible development practices.

If the world continues to consume greater amounts of electricity, and it will, climate goals and clean energy ambitions will rely on significantly greater supplies of many minerals and metals. The problem for these 50 nations is that the current supply rests with a handful of nations with China being the outsized .... read more

Turning the Tide on Tailings: Creating Opportunities Rather Than Risks
New ways of managing mine tailings

By Carly Leonida, European Editor

The past five years have been nothing short of transformative for the way in which mine operators view and manage their waste streams, and nowhere more so than in tailings. The Brumadinho dam collapse on January 25, 2019, sparked a chain of events which have seen tailings management elevated in priority across the industry and in the eyes of its stakeholders. What was, for most, an unfortunate by-product of mineral processing which must be managed in perpetuity at the expense of the operator has .... read more

Designing Today’s Conveyor Systems for Tomorrow’s Needs
Miners expect the next generation of high-capacity conveyor systems to be longer, faster and more powerful. They’d also like them to be safer, quieter and energy efficient. Here’s what’s coming down the belt line from top suppliers.

By Russell A. Carter, Contributing Editor

Conveyors are consistently absent from inclusion in the “Ten technologies that will disrupt the mining industry” forecasts that consulting and market-survey companies seem to publish with increasing frequency. However, the fact that at least one mine’s bulk material transportation system can be seen from space – the conveyor from the inland Bou Craa phosphate mine in Morocco to a Mediterranean sea port 61 miles away .... read more
