Nickel 28 Capital Corp. said the Ramu mine’s high-pressure acid leach (HPAL) plant, located near Basumuk on the north coast of Papua New Guinea (PNG), has successfully resumed full production following an earthquake on October 7. The earthquake, which had a magnitude of 6.7, triggered immediate safety protocols and a comprehensive evaluation of the site’s infrastructure.

Nickel 28 holds an 8.6% stake in the Ramu JV along with Metallurgical Corporation of China (MMC, 85%) and other PNG interests (6.4%). While the event disrupted operations temporarily, MCC reported no injuries or significant environmental impacts.

At this time, Nickel 28 said it is not anticipating any material impact on production and is still guiding for 33,000 metric tons (mt) of contained nickel and 2,900 mt of contained cobalt for 2023.
