Nornickel Implements Major Clean-up Program
The program includes the demolition of old abandoned buildings and structures, pipelines, utility lines and networks, and the removal of scrap metal accumulated around industrial sites. It will affect all areas of the city of Norilsk and its territories. Since early summer, the company’s specialists have cleaned up the area of more than 300,000 m2 of waste and old equipment, an area equivalent to 56 football pitches. By winter, the specially set up landscaping company will have cleared a total of around 6 million square meters.
To date, about 125,000 m2 of areas adjacent to the elemental sulphur production unit under construction at the Nadezhda Metallurgical Plant have been cleaned. The company has also cleaned more than 22,000 m2 of land in the area of the former motor transport factory, which was unofficially called “Stroybaza Nadezhda.” The main networks and industrial areas of CHPP No. 1 and CHPP No. 3 on the area of 161,200 m2 were cleaned from debris. In the course of landscaping works 45 dilapidated buildings and structures were dismantled. Specialists extracted, collected and removed 47,100 metric tons (mt) of waste and 3,100 mt of scrap metal.
