Canadian Zinc has reported the results of the preliminary feasibility study (PFS) on the company’s 100%-owned Prairie Creek mine in the Northwest Territories, Canada, along with new independent mineral resource and mineral reserve estimates for the project. The company has also announced a planned acquisition of Paragon Minerals in an all-share transac-tion that values Paragon at C$2.8 million. Paragon is an exploration company whose flagship project is its 100% interest in the South Tally Pond property, which includes the Lemarchant deposit and is located in a proven mining district near Buchans, Newfoundland.

Prairie Creek:The Prairie Creek PFS outlines an 11-year mine life based on a defined mineral reserve of 5.2 million mt, grading 9.4% zinc and 9.5% lead, with 151 g/mt silver. The PFS does not consid-er inferred resources of 6.2 million mt of 14.5% zinc, 11.5% lead, and 229 g/mt silver. Production is planned averge 60,000 mt/y of zinc concentrate and 60,000 mt/y of lead concentrate contain-ing 76 million lb/y of zinc, 90 million lb/y of lead, and 2.2 million oz/y of silver. Pre-production capital costs are estimated at $193 million, including contingency.

The Prairie Creek mine was largely con-structed and permitted in 1982 but was placed on care and maintenance due to declining metal prices. The current project benefits from an existing 1,000-mt/d mill and related infrastructure.

Mining is planned as an underground operation at mining rates averaging 1,350 mt/d, primarily utilizing the cut-and-fill mining method, with paste backfill con-suming 100% of the tailings stream gener-ated from the 1,000-mt/d milling process. Mining will initially be focused on the existing three levels of underground work-ings while a ramp is driven to access lower levels. Future underground development workings will include four new deeper lev-els accessed by the ramp.

Five new 1.5-MW, diesel-powered gen-erator units will provide power and heat for the site.

Acquisition of Paragon Minerals: Paragon Minerals South Tally Pond proper-ty covers 261 km 2 and is immediately adjacent to Teck Resources’ Duck Pond copper-zinc mine and mill complex. The Lemarchant deposit on the property is a significant precious-metal-rich, copper-lead-zinc volcanogenic massive sulphide discovery. An initial NI 43-101 mineral resource estimate for the deposit includes an indicated resource of 1.24 million mt at average grades of 5.38% zinc, 0.58% cop-per, 1.19% lead, 1.01 g/mt gold, and 59.17 g/mt silver and an inferred resource of 1.34 million mt at average grades of 3.70% zinc, 0.41% copper, 0.86% lead, 1.00 g/mt gold, and 50.41 g/mt silver.

The Lemarchant deposit has been defined to a depth of 210 m and remains open along strike and at depth. The explo-ration potential outside of the Lemarchant area is still relatively untapped with numer-ous priority VMS targets that have seen limited or no drilling.

John Kearney, chairman and CEO of Canadian Zinc, said, “This merger with Paragon is consistent with Canadian Zinc’s strategy of building a growth-focused base metal producer in North America and rep-resents an excellent value opportunity for shareholders of both companies.

“We believe the addition of Para-gon’s advanced exploration assets is a major step toward achieving our strategy of creating a strong intermediate base metal company with an attractive growth profile focused on enhancing shareholder value.”
