Second Ultra-Class Digger for Mt. Keith

The second of two 800-mt Hitachi EX8000-6 hydraulic excavators has been commissioned at BHP Billiton’s Mt. Keith nickel ore mine in Western Australia. The new excavator will join what was, at the time of its commissioning in February 2008, the first of the big machines to be commissioned in this country. The new machine at Mt. Keith will bring to six the total number of EX8000-6’s in service throughout the world.

The flagship of the Hitachi excavator fleet, the shovel is powered by twin Cummins QSK60 diesels, each developing 1,450 kW at 1,800 rpm. Configured as a face shovel and equipped with a 43 m3 bucket, the new excavator will be loading out 240-mt rear dump trucks at Mt. Keith.
