Golden Star Completes Wassa Mill Repairs

In Ghana, Golden Star Resources recently announced that the pinion gear assembly on Wassa’s Mill No. 2 ball mill that experienced mechanical failure in late August has been repaired and the mill has been recommissioned. Testing of Mill No. 2 commenced ahead of schedule on October 20, 2008, and ore feed began on October 21, 2008. The mill is now operating at 100% capacity, according to the company.

High grade ore continues to be delivered from the Benso mine to the Wassa mill. Since commencement of ore transportation in August, Benso ore shipments to Wassa have progressively increased and, as of October 20, 2008, 81,000 metric tons (mt) grading approximately 4 g/mt gold have been delivered to the Wassa stockpile. The ramp up of ore transportation has proceeded as planned, having averaged over 2,400 mt/d for the month of October to date. As the company initiates night-shift haulage in November, it is expected that the ore haulage rate should increase to an average of over 3,000 mt/d.
