Crowflight Minerals reported in early October 2008 that construction was nearly complete at its Bucko Lake nickel mine near Wabowden, Manitoba, in the Thompson Nickel Belt. Commissioning had begun, and ramp-up to full commercial production was expected to be complete by early 2009.

Commissioning of the Bucko Lake crushing plant was essentially complete and crushing of ore had begun. Mill commissioning had been underway since early September, and crushed ore was being stockpiled in preparation for mill startup. Production of concentrate was expected to begin during the second half of October.

Bucko Lake is designed to process 1,000 mt/d of ore and produce 11.1 million lb/y of nickel in concentrates. Exploration of the Bucko Lake and satellite deposits is ongoing and indicates potential for establishing reserves sufficient to support a production increase to 1,500 mt/d.
