Safer Giant Tire Handling with TireHand



Iowa Mold Tooling (IMT) has introduced a new fallback protection feature for its TireHand tire manipulator that enhances and improves customer safety. The company’s TireHand product line, available in loader or forklift mounted options, and described in E&MJ’s November MINExpo show report, is designed for installing and rotating giant tires used in mining and can accommodate tires weighing up to 25,000 lb. TireHandler models feature 390° of body rotation, which gives the operator flexible adjustment opportunities from the security of the integrated control console. Other features include lateral shifting capability, optional quick-coupler attachments and multiple-site vehicle packages. The new TireHand fallback arms provide an additional layer of operator safety: To engage this feature, the tire technician mechanically rotates the fallback arms into the area between the tire and the TireHand body. If the tire is freed from the TireHand pads, the tire will fall a short distance against the fallback protection arms, leaving a path for the operator to exit without injury. www.imt.com Mine-Designed Variable Frequency Drives Magnetek, a manufacturer of digital power and motion control systems, recently introduced its new 1,000-volt air- and liquid-cooled variable frequency drives. Designed to operate in applications ranging from simple variable or constant torque, to sophisticated networked systems, Magnetek’s SD1000 drives are based on the proven control platform used in the company’s SD500 traction drives. Each drive is custom designed to handle common mine voltage of 950 VAC, and power engineered using the latest IGBT technology. The drives offer four modes of control, network communications options, application-specific drive software and standard plus optional input/outputs. These rugged and reliable drives are designed for tough mining environments and are available in panel-only or enclosure- mounted configurations.
